I love guitar, despite having no particular talent for it.I'm in my early 50s and started playing guitar around 35 years ago. I was self taught and learned songs rather than theory. I reached an intermediate level, and played in garage bands as a teenager.
A few years ago I dusted off my old gat and started playing again, but was stuck playing the same things over and over again. I tried to teach myself theory to improvise. For genuine learning, though, books and the internet were not my friend - I didn't get far and became discouraged. If something didn't make sense, further investigation made things even more confusing.Earlier this year I decided to try lessens, and after researching tutors, felt that Joe looked the best aligned with what I was looking for. In the few months I've studied with Joe, I've learnt more than I had in the previous 35 years.
I've transitioned from stumbling through basic pentatonic scales to knowing modes. Not just blindly learning shapes on the fretboard, but, step by step understanding scales, how they work (or don't) with chords, and ideas and concepts on how to add colour and build speed and fluency. When somethings unclear to me, Joe frames things in a different, more relatable way which ties into things I'm more confident with.If you are considering taking lessons, I'd highly recommend Joe. I'm still not sure that I have any particular talent for music, but I do know that I've never enjoyed playing the guitar more!

I’ve been playing music on and off for over 20 years and Joe is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. Aside from the fact he’s an excellent, passionate guitarist and music theorist, he's a fantastic teacher and an incredibly nice guy. Joe makes me feel welcomed and comfortable each and every lesson, and isn’t afraid to lay down a challenge to motivate me.

Joe takes the time to phrase difficult concepts in a way that's easy to understand. He’s also observant enough to recognise when you’re feeling bored or frustrated, and will switch things up to stop that from happening. He will also point out mistakes or areas where you can improve without making you feel bad about it. Since I took up guitar again after a long absence in May 2021, I’ve far surpassed the level I was at previously and I can say with confidence that Joe has a lot to do with my awesome progress.

It sounds a bit cringe but I could write a much longer review about how happy I am with my lessons, but honestly the best way to find out if he’s what you’re after is by booking a few lessons and checking him out for yourself. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
